Cypress Ships Long Range 2.4 GHz Radio System on a Chip; WirelessUSB LR Solution Offers up to 50 Meter Range for Commercial and Industrial Wireless Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Feb. 2, 2004— Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:CY) today announced its WirelessUSB(TM) LR device (CYWUSB6935), a low-cost 2.4 GHz radio system-on-a-chip solution delivering up to 50 meters or more of wireless connectivity for commercial and industrial applications.

The WirelessUSB LR solution extends the value of Cypress's successful WirelessUSB product family into longer-range commercial and industrial multipoint-to-point applications, including building and home automation, industrial control, utility metering, transportation, paging systems and presentation equipment. Priced starting below $3.00 in volume quantities, it provides an alternative to complex and costly wireless networking solutions like Zigbee and Bluetooth, enabling broad market adoption of wireless systems.

"Cypress's WirelessUSB LR chip provides a fast path to wireless connectivity in many wired applications," said Norm Taffe, managing director of the Wireless Business Unit in Cypress's Personal Communications Division. "In industrial automation, for example, WirelessUSB LR radically changes the cost structure for installation and maintenance while providing tremendous flexibility for system configuration."

"Many industrial and commercial wireless applications utilize low-frequency solutions that provide limited channel availability and bandwidth, and only regional coverage," said Scott Smyser, senior analyst -- Frequency Control, RF and Wireless, at iSuppli Corp. "WirelessUSB LR provides a 2.4-GHz solution to overcome these issues, economically connecting wireless devices at long ranges."

WirelessUSB LR devices employ Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technology to avoid signal interference from other technologies in the 2.4 GHz band like 802.11b, Bluetooth, and wireless emissions from both cordless phones and microwave ovens and features -95 dBm receive sensitivity ensuring a strong omnidirectional signal at 50 meters and beyond. Featuring a highly integrated radio transceiver plus digital baseband, they are single-chip solutions that enable designers to significantly decrease development time, component count and system cost. The devices are also noted for their very low standby power consumption. They have a standby current of approximately 0.25-microamp and up to 0 dBm output power which translates into years of battery life for a typical sensor/actuator. In addition, WirelessUSB LR devices feature a data transmission rate of up to 62.5 kbps with an average latency of below 10 milliseconds.

Pricing and Availability

Cypress's WirelessUSB LR solution is offered in three configurations. A 48-pin QFN-packaged device, priced starting at $2.93 in 50,000-unit quantities, is in production for commercial applications today. An industrial-temperature-tested version of the product is available for sampling today, and priced starting at $3.93 in volume quantities. The device is also offered in a 28-pin SOIC package starting at $3.70 in volume quantities. Both industrial devices will be available in production by mid-year.
